GREENWOOD, Indiana – Three people were killed and two others were wounded Sunday night in a shopping district in Indiana after a man opened fire with a rifle in a food court and was shot by an armed civilian.
Greenwood Police Chief Jim Ison said a man entered the Greenwood Park Mall with a rifle and some ammunition magazines and opened fire in the food court. At a news conference, a 22-year-old man from nearby Bartholomew County said he was legally carrying a firearm at a mall but shot a gunman. Four of those shot were women and one was a man, Eason said. He did not immediately know the exact gender or age of the victims.
A 12-year-old girl is among the two injured and both are in stable condition, he said. Police confiscated a suspicious backpack in a bathroom near the food court, Mr. Ison said. The officer went to the mall around 6 pm. To report the shooting.
“The real hero of the day is a citizen who can legally carry a firearm in this food court and stop the shooter as soon as he starts,” Eason said. 2022 was the last shot to make Americans uncomfortable. Schools, churches, grocery stores and the 4th of July parade in Highland Park, Illinois have been in the kill zone in recent months. Still, the reality of America’s staggering homicide rate is often more apparent with the death of an individual, who rarely makes the news.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police and several other agencies are assisting in the investigation. “In our country, we’re tired of this other type of incident,” said Indianapolis Deputy Police Chief Chris Bailey.
As of Sunday evening, officials said there was no threat in the area. Greenwood is a southern suburb of Indianapolis with a population of about 60,000. Mayor Mark Myers called for “a prayer for the victims and our first responders.”
“This tragedy is at the heart of our community,” Myers said in a statement. Authorities said they will provide details on Monday.
