Instagram is currently the most popular news source among UK teenagers, followed by TikTok and YouTube, according to a report released Thursday by media watchdog Ofcom.
In 2022, almost one in three teenagers used Instagram as a news source, with 28% each following TikTok and YouTube. According to
Online polls show teenagers get news from BBC One and BBC Two, traditionally the most popular source of information among teenagers, up from 45% five years ago. Only a quarter.
TikTok is showing the biggest growth in news users, with an estimated 3.9 million UK adults currently using the app. That’s about the same number of people using the Sky News website and app.
Television news is the most trusted news source for 71% of UK adults aged 16 to 24 among TikTok news users, compared to social media news for just 35%. use of
Print issues and online newspapers also fell from 51% to 38% in 2018.
“This is a trend that was observed before the pandemic accelerated and looks set to be exacerbated by the pandemic, driven by a significant reduction in the reach of print newspapers in recent years,” Ofcom said. The percentage of teenagers using Facebook News also dropped from 34% to 22% in 2018.
