From Washington – At least 17 Democratic lawmakers, including prominent progressives Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and Ilhan Omar, were arrested outside Washington’s Supreme Court for protesting abortion rights, police said.
US Capitol Police said on Twitter that protesters blocked traffic on nearby streets and that police received three warnings before arresting them.
“We have arrested a total of 35 people for crowding, obstruction and harassment,” police said. “The number of arrestees includes 17 members.”
A small protest came three weeks after the Supreme Court overturned the controversial ruling in the landmark Roe v. Wade case. .. The Wade Act of 1973 guaranteed women’s access to abortion.
“Today I was arrested in contempt of the Supreme Court with a member of the House of Representatives,” Omar, Minnesota, said on Twitter.
“I will continue to do my best to warn of our attack on fertility!
” she tweeted. Rep. Carolyn Maloney of New York was also arrested, “There is no democracy unless women have control over their bodies and decisions about their health, including assisted reproductive technology.
“The Republican Party is behind this decision. It’s not about life, it’s about controlling the bodies of women, girls and those who might be pregnant.
Instead of picking up Ocasio Cortez, Omar and others were handcuffed and waved at supporters in protest. Video of the protest was seen.
