TE24 International Desk:
Taiwan will give $ 1 million to Afghan earthquake relief projects due to calls for sympathetic help from the United Nations and others, public authorities said late Thursday.
Because of China’s tensions, Taiwan is not part of the UN, which considers the fairly represented island as part of its domain, but it is usually quick to show that it is a competent person from the local area worldwide.
Taiwan’s government office said in a statement that government authorities would “respond to (and) the United Nations and other sympathetic calls to pay less attention to public boundaries in the spirit of public interest in disaster relief.”
However, Taiwan will not send a search and rescue team after talks with various countries and considering transportation problems, Xavier Chang, a spokesman for the office, added.
Taiwan is similarly located in an earthquake-prone region and regularly sends rescue teams to other war zones on all planets.
China has said it is ready to help Afghanistan but does not appear to be able to do so at present. About 1,000 people have so far been confirmed dead in the quake in a remote part of the country this week.
Taiwan and China have competed for public aid for Ukraine, with Taiwan paying more than $ 30 million for deportation and reconstruction, and China paying about $ 3 million.
China has blamed Taiwan for engaging in gifts for political purposes. It has been strongly dismissed by Taipei government authorities who say the guide came “from our heart”.
