The US ambassador to Sri Lanka said he met the new president on Friday morning (July 22) to express his “serious concern” about violence against protesters in Colombo.
Now is not the time to crack down on citizens, but wait for the immediate and decisive steps the government can take to restore public confidence, restore stability and rebuild the economy.
Security forces searched and partially cleared protest camps occupied by government facilities in Colombo, sparking concerns that the crackdown began the day after President Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn in.
