TAIPEI – The United States wants Taiwan to always be safe and free and will not back down, US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said during a visit to Taipei on Wednesday.
Pelosi said at a joint news conference with Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen that while respecting the “one China” principle, solidarity with Taiwan is more important than ever. The United States supports the status quo and does not seek violence in Taiwan, Pelosi added.
Asked about the economic impact on Taiwan as a result of her visit, Pelosi said the US tipping law opens the door to better economic exchanges between the US and Taiwan.
Taiwan is committed to maintaining the status quo across the Taiwan Strait, Tsai said, adding that China’s military exercises in response to Pelosi’s visit were an unnecessary response.
