TE24 International Desk:
GENEVA – The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed 14,000 monkeypox cases worldwide and reported five deaths in Africa, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Wednesday (July 20).
The WHO says most cases reported so far have been found in Europe, particularly among men who have sex with men, but all deaths have occurred in Africa, but monkeypox outbreaks are historic. This is an area that is attracting attention.
On Thursday, the WHO commission will convene a second meeting to determine whether the outbreak constitutes a public health emergency of international concern, its highest alert level.
“Despite the commission’s recommendations, WHO will continue to do all it can to help countries stop infections and save lives,” he said.
